FORSYTH BARR MATINEE 1: BACH AND THE BIRDS

Telemann’s skills as composer of programmatic music are evident in this highly witty and entertaining suite depicting Don Quixote’s adventures.

In Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.2, an exuberant dialogue between the soloists is set against a backdrop of strings and continuo, and a sublime drama unfolds as the soloists weave together in different combinations.

The bird-themed second half opens with Four NZ Bird Songs which paints the pictures of New Zealand’s native birds.  Haydn’s symphony La Poule (The Hen) gained its nickname from the first movement’s humorous hen-like quirky exchange between violin and oboe.

Principal Guest Conductor James Judd conducts extensively in the USA, the UK, Europe and Asia, and he is also the NZSO’s Music Director Emeritus.

Of a recent performance by our soloist NZ soprano Rebecca Ryan, the Otago Daily Times wrote: “Ryan’s performances were stupendous!”
