Dunedin Arts Festival

Tuesday 20 April 2021

Show Information

What are the connections between Indian cinema and the traditional Indian dance form Bharatanatyam? Looks like there are a lot!

Presented by Natyaloka, Cinema-Natyam explores some gems that showcase the complex relationship between Bharatanatyam and Indian cinema. More than that, the evening investigates how Bharatanatyam influenced Hollywood cinema!

Natyaloka is celebrating its 10th year in Dunedin and it is the only Indian dance school that teaches Bharatanatyam in the Otago region. As a community driven dance school, Natyaloka dancers are a representation of the vibrant multicultural community of Dunedin. Cinema-Natyam has been conceived and choreographed by Swaroopa Prameela Unni. There will also be guest dancers performing Mohiniyattam at the event, choreographed by Emilie S R, a renowned artist from France.
