Melbourne-based conductor Richard Davis and soloist DSO Principal Flute Luca Manghi will guide us through an Italian-themed concert.

Vivaldi’s Baroque La Notte (“The Night”) is far from docile – its second movement is entitled “Fantasmi” – “Ghosts”.

From the 19th century are Briccialdi’s flute concerto, Puccini’s The Chrysanthemums – an elegy for an Italian-born nobleman who had briefly served as the King of Spain in the 1870s, and Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony – written after an 1830 Italian trip, conveying Italy’s countryside, art and architecture.

More recently is Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite (1922), drawn from his music for a full ballet. This is based on Pergolesi’s music, spiced with Stravinsky’s characteristic pungent harmonies and taut rhythms.
